| MMG was founded in 1883 by Mrs Alice Todd Osborne as "The Mission to Mediterranean Garrisons". Alice was born into an Army family, her father and other relatives being officers in the Scots Greys. As a committed Christian she had a deep concern for the moral and spiritual welfare of soldiers. She knew the rigours of army life and the problems of alcohol abuse. The Glasgow Soldier's Home She opened a Soldier's Home on Maryhill Road, Glasgow, near to the Royal Highland Fusiliers Barracks. The Home, which was exclusive to soldiers, had a tea room and a quiet room. It was enormously successful and set a pattern for many similar Centres in various parts of the world. Today, the Mission is called "The Mission to Military Garrisons" and exists to serve British Armed Forces Personnel and their families by providing alcohol-free hospitality in coffee shops and cafeterias. Our Centres may also have shops and are often located in isolated situations, for example the Falkland Islands. By offering this service, the Mission is able to minister to the whole person, offering moral, physical and spiritual support to all who use our facilities. Wherever possible our staff support the work of the local Service Chaplain and the ministry of the Garrison Church. Our staff are active, evangelical Christians who may also be found ministering out with the MMG Centres in local bible study groups, children's work and by invitation in local schools. Some of our Centres offer a youth work in their local communities. |
